Eco-guides

Tourism in Velondriake is small but growing, and can provide some villagers with a supplemental, environmentally-friendly source of income. Several members of the Velondriake community are training to become ecoguides - leading snorkeling expeditions, boating trips and birdwatching treks, while also educating visitors about the area's unique natural resources and the need to protect them.

Further development of sustainable tourism in the region is an important next step if tourism is to be a viable alternative to fishing. Strengthening tourism to the area involves both increasing the number of tourists and encouraging longer stays in the region.

Ecolodge

In addition to training local guides, Velondriake – in partnership with Blue Ventures – is in the process of building an ecolodge just north of Andavadoaka village. This ecolodge will include rustic hotel accommodation and a restaurant, and will offer a variety of recreational activities and educational workshops, allowing visitors to learn about the region's unique culture and environment.

The ecolodge is owned and operated by the Ecolodge Committee – a local group comprised of the Velondriake association, the Andavadoaka women's group, and select community members in the local commune of Befandefa. Proceeds from the ecolodge will be used to support management of the Velondriake LMMA.
